How to Buy a Handgun in California
In order to purchase a HANDGUN from Gunther Guns you will need to bring the following paperwork with you :
NOTE: IF YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE HAS "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY" WRITTEN IN THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER, THEN YOU WILL NEED YOUR PASSPORT OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE IN ORDER TO BEGIN A FIREARM PURCHASE.
(1) Clear evidence of identity and age. This can be one of the following:
• A valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Whichever of these you use, it must show your current residence. No PO Box.
NOTE: IF YOUR ARE NOT CURRENTLY AT THE ADDRESS LISTED ON YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE, THEN YOU WILL NEED TWO (2) PROOFS OF RESIDENCY TO PURCHASE A HANDGUN.
FIRST PROOF OF RESIDENCY MUST BE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING GOVERNMENT ISSUED DOCUMENTS:
- THE CURRENT REGISTRATION TO YOUR VEHICLE
- DRIVER HISTORY REPORT FROM DMV (PRINTED ON DMV PAPER)
- CITY WATER BILL
- PROPERTY TAX BILL
- JURY SUMMONS
- PROPERTY DEED
- GRANT DEED
- VALID CALIFORNIA HUNTING LICENSE
- DMV DISABLED PLACARD
- DMV REGISTRATION RENEWAL NOTICE
THE SECOND PROOF OF RESIDENCY CAN BE:
- CABLE/INTERNET BILL
- WATER BILL
- SDG&E BILL
- RESIDENTIAL LEASE AGREEMENT
• A Military Identification accompanied by Web Orders.
OR
• If you are not a United States citizen, you must provide documentation that shows your Alien Registration Number or I-94 Number. In addition, to prove California residency below, you will need to provide 3 months worth of your Proof of California residence in (2) below.
AND
(2) Proof of California residency. This can be one of the following per PC 12071(b)(8)(C):
• Utility bill from within the last 3 months. The name and address must match your document from section (1) above. Examples of utility bills that are acceptable are those that provide direct service to your residence by a physical connection (i.e. hard wired telephone or cable connection or water or gas pipeline connection); or those that provide a telemetric connection to a non-mobile, fixed antenna reception device at your residence (i.e. satellite television or radio broadcast service).
OR
• Residential lease. This would be a signed a dated contract (and notarized) by which you as a tenant agree to pay a specified monetary sum or other consideration for the right to occupy a residence. Your name and address must match your documentation from section (1) above.
OR
• Property deed. This would be a valid deed of trust for your property where you currently live that identifies you as a grantee of the trust or a valid Certificate of Title issued by a licensed title insurance company that identifies you as a title holder to the property where you currently live. Your name and address must match your documentation from section (1) above.
OR
• Military permanent duty station orders indicating assignment within California.
OR
• Other evidence of residency as permitted by the Department of Justice. This would include a current, government-issued (city, county, special district, state or federal) license, permit, or registration, other than a California Driver License or California Identification Card, that has a specified expiration date or period of validity. A valid peace officer credential issued by a California law enforcement agency to an active, reserve or retired peace officer is acceptable. Your name and address must match your documentation from section (1) above.
AND
(3) Firearm Safety Certificate. If you don't already have a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC), you can obtain an FSC at Gunther Guns by passing a multiple choice test, passing a safe handling demonstration and paying a $25 test fee. Peace officers and Military are except from the FSC requirement.
(4) Method of Payment. Mastercard, VISA, Discover, American Express and US Currency. Payment must be made in full to begin process.
